Christopher Gadsden from South Carolina gave us the Gadsden Flag. The “Don’t Tread on Me” Flag was in response to the Stamp Act of 1765, in which Gadsden organized opposition to the oppressive law. His argument to the unfair tax was, if allowed, would lead to more and more unfair taxation by the government.

Gadsden helped to rally opposition to the unfair tax law and prevented the landing of a ship sent to enforce the tax law. After a holding off the ship, the ship returned to England. This was one of the first major oppositions to the British rule in the new colonies.

The US flag represents the national government established by the US constitution, with the rights of citizens promised by, The Bill of Rights.

More importly it is a symbol of personal liberty of individuals as set forth in the Declaration of Independence.
The famous slogan “Come and Take It” was used in the Texas revolution in the 1830’s. The Mexican government had given the Texans a cannon as a gift, but later wanted it back. As a symbol of defiance, the Texans made a flag with the canon image and the “Come and Take It” saying. The small unit of Texans defeated the Mexican army in their attempt to take the cannon.
